Students will develop their observational skills by using their senses and selected observational tools. They will gather and record observed information in a number of ways, and reflect on these findings to identify patterns or connections, make predictions and test and refine their ideas with increasing accuracy. Students will explore the way objects and phenomena function, identify parts of a system and gain an understanding of increasingly complex cause and effect relationships.

Students will use their learning in science to plan positive and realistic action to improve their welfare and that of other living things and the environment. Students will have the opportunity to identify and reflect upon "big ideas" by making connections between the questions asked and the concepts which should be driving the inquiry. These concepts define the specific expectations within each content strand. The students will become aware of the relevance these concepts have to all of their learning.
Fifth grade students will identify and discuss the essential elements in an effective multimedia presentation and how that affects their capacity to effectively communicate. They will explore the functionality of multimedia tools to express personal and academic ideas and concepts. They are expected to understand the ethical, moral and social implications of the growing use of technology. They will research, analyze and present information using a variety of different media as well as recognize how technology developed over time to meet human need. An in-depth study of communication, as interpreted in advertisement using a variety of technological tools and other resources and its impact on humans are realized through the Unit of Inquiry "Power of Suggestion".
Fifth graders will expand research and presentation skills with the production of in-depth research projects. Students are expected to responsibly conduct research from electronic resources, following legal and ethical guide lines as well as copyright regulations. They will continue to creatively use graphics and drawing programs to appropriately illustrate subject matter. They should be able to select and import appropriate pictures and graphics from a variety of sources. They will begin to understand how web pages are constructed and work on developing a web page.
The students will plan and produce multimedia presentations using HyperStudio, PowerPoint or other multimedia editing programs, including: Web Page construction and video production programs. These integrated projects incorporate skills such as the creation of original text using a word processor, illustrations created in a paint program. They will learn to import, resize and edit images from the internet and other electronic information sources, adding music and the recording of their own voice narration. The assembly of these presentations incorporates the creation of links from one page to the other and the planning and decision making process for the transitions that take place between cards of information.
Students will be introduced to the creation of a newspaper in a professional layout and publishing program such as QuarkExpress or Adobe PageMaker. Students are actively engaged in student exchange via email that enhances the learning of languages and the understanding of different cultures. Fifth Graders create web pages as a presentation tool within the curricular framework of their units of inquiry. They will use industry standard software (Macromedia Dreamweaver) for web page creation as well as scan and manipulate photos and illustrations with Adobe Photoshop.
Students are expected to participate in the production and editing of a video presentation production, including learning the basics of story boarding and editing of video and still images and the addition of narration, sound and text.
Students will discover the capabilities of their bodies and the variety of ways in which they are able to use their bodies to solve problems, address physical challenges, function as part of a group, manipulate equipment or apparatus, and express themselves kinesthetically in a range of situations. Students will be exposed to a number of activities that will develop motor skills that may later be applied in various sports. They will become aware of a number of positive leisure time pursuits. Students will be introduced to a healthy and active lifestyle and ways to exercise for fitness.
Students will be able to experience and perform songs from a wide range of material, using 2 part harmony in some cases. They will perform with sensitivity and accuracy. They will be able to create and perform their own music and be competent with their recorder playing, and where possible other instruments too. They will be able to read music and have a sound understanding of notation.

The students will continue to develop the skills of observation and will seek out a variety of resources. They will be confident in the everyday use of sketchbooks for recording observations, ideas, pattern and color. They will choose the appropriate materials for the task and will build on previous skills and experiences in using a variety of materials. They will develop the skill of looking at artworks and artefacts of different periods and will be able to draw conclusions and make predictions about their function. The students will work well both alone and in groups and will be sensitive to the work of others, suggesting modifications and discussing reactions constructively. They will become aware of the elements of design and will develop a more critical stance to their own environment
