School Profile

 

Lucaya International School (LIS) is an accredited, college preparatory, non-profit, independent, non-sectarian, co-educational day school governed by a Board of Directors. Founded in 1998, the school is designed to serve the children of the local and international community living on Grand Bahama. All classes are offered in English, with the exception of modern language courses. The educational program is modeled along North American, British and International Baccalaureate Organization guidelines. The school year runs from mid-August to mid-June and has a minimum instructional period of 175 days divided into two semesters.

 

Philosophy

LIS strives to develop every student's full potential, empowering each child to become a creative, critical and independent thinker. We encourage students to become confident individuals and conscientious citizens of the world, who pursue a lifelong commitment to personal development and service to others.

 

Accreditation and Membership

LIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Our CIS accreditation is also recognized by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

LIS is an IB World School and is authorized to offer both the Primary Years (IB PYP) and IB Diploma Programmes (IBDP).

LIS is also accredited with the NAECOB (National Accreditation Equivalency Council of The Bahamas).

 

Facilities

LIS sits on a 12 acre, purpose built campus situated in a quiet, rural setting within easy reach of the main residential areas of the island. There are classrooms in the Early Childhood Center, Primary School, Middle and High School and I.B. Building. In addition, there is an administration building & library, computer lab, design technology classroom, science labs, music and art rooms, covered lunch areas, basketball courts, sand volleyball court, soccer field, all-purpose field and playgrounds.

 

Students and Faculty

LIS is a Pre K-12 school with an enrollment of 185 students for the 2023/2024 academic year, which are split pretty evenly between the Primary and Secondary Schools. Typically, the student body represents around 30 nationalities with approximately 50% from the Bahamas, 40% from the U.S., U.K. and Canada and the remaining 10% from various countries throughout the world. The diverse student body demands a flexible and creative faculty. Typically, there are around ten nationalities represented in the teaching faculty. The certified, professional staff is selected from among the best candidates the world has to offer.

 

Curriculum

The curriculum is based on North American, British and international programs of education and incorporates the best educational practices from around the world. There is a strong emphasis on a commitment to global and intercultural education. The school strives for academic excellence, a well-balanced development of all aspects of the student's personality and an appreciation for lifelong learning.

Pearsons Edexcel. International GCSE: English Language, English Literature, Spanish, History, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics (Higher).

Year 10 & 11 Electives: Design Technology or Visual Arts

International Baccalaureate Diploma: English A Language and Literature (Higher Level, Standard Level), Spanish B (HL, SL),  Spanish Ab Initio (SL), History (HL, SL), Geography (HL, SL), Design Technology  (HL, SL), Biology (HL, SL), Chemistry (HL, SL), Physics (HL, SL), Mathematics AA(Hl, SL), Visual Arts (HL, SL).

 

LIS Graduation Requirements

  • A student must successfully complete a minimum of 28 credits as specified below for graduation from the high school program, specified at Year 10 through Year 13.  One credit is approximately equivalent to one Carnegie unit and encompasses one year of study.
  • 4 English Credits, 4 Mathematics Credits, 4 Science Credits,
  • 4 Humanities Credits, 4 Modern Languages Credits, 2 Creative Arts or DT Credits, 1 Physical Education Credit,
  • 1 Credit Theory of Knowledge & Extended Essay
  • 4 Electives (includes extra cores) Credits.

 

GPA is computed based only on coursework completed at Lucaya International School. Courses completed at other institutions are not typically listed on the transcript. Copies of previous schools' records are provided when available. The LIS Grade Scale is based on a 1 to 7 point. The grading system is specific to the course of study students are enrolled in and linked through the school GPA. School GPA for year 10 to 13 is determined by the Grading Chart below.
