Early Childhood Department

Early Childhood Department (ECD) is comprised of the Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Year 1 classrooms.  This part of our campus is dedicated to our youngest learners and focuses on a hands-on experiential approach to learning through the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Our ratio of teachers to students in early childhood is 1:12 and this allows for a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn through exploration and inquiry.

We emphasize early reading and writing skills as well as the social and emotional growth of our students as they prepare to enter the older grades.

Students in the ECD participate in Music, Spanish, Drama, Physical Education and Library classes in addition to receiving instruction from their homeroom teacher in Math, Literacy (Reading and Writing), Science, and Social Studies all through the PYP Units of Inquiry.

From the moment our youngest learners join Lucaya International School (LIS), they become part of the LIS family and join in the weekly assemblies with the rest of the primary students as well as other school-wide activities.

By the end of Year 1, the majority of students are reading fluently, writing basic sentences and completing addition and subtraction problems independently.  This gives them the head start they need to be successful in the Year 2 classroom and beyond.
