Middle School (Years 7 & 8)
Middle School Overview
The Lucaya International School Middle School programme is designed to prepare students for High School and future International GCSE and IB pathways.
The programme emphasizes learning as a concept-driven, inquiry-based process, supporting the development of active, reflective, and internationally minded learners.
The Middle Years at LIS recognize the distinctive intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of adolescent learners. This stage is viewed as a critical transition between Primary and Secondary School. Students are supported as they move from a largely self-contained learning environment to a subject-specialist, departmentalized structure that promotes increasing independence, responsibility, and learner agency.
Instruction is differentiated to meet diverse learning needs and learning styles, with an emphasis on student-centred learning and individual support. Teaching and assessment approaches include inquiry-based projects, collaborative and cooperative learning, experiential tasks, guided instruction, laboratory investigations, research assignments, reports, essays, and a balance of formative and summative assessments.
The programme aims to develop students with strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, effective research and communication skills, and the ability to apply learning across subject areas and real-world contexts. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning through self-assessment and peer feedback, supporting the development of metacognitive skills, independence, and a growth mindset. Central to the Middle School experience is the development of personal values, social responsibility, and global awareness, fostering positive self-identity and a commitment to both local and international communities.
